Why Sport Pilot?
The Sport Pilot certificate was created by the FAA in 2004 to make flying more accessible. It's perfect for recreational pilots who want to enjoy flying without the time and expense of a full Private Pilot certificate.
- Only 20 hours minimum flight time required
- No FAA medical certificate needed (valid driver's license)
- Lower training costs
- Fly in good weather during daylight
- Stepping stone to Private Pilot
Limitations to Know
While Sport Pilot is great for recreational flying, it does have some limitations compared to Private Pilot. Understanding these helps you decide which is right for you.
- Daytime VFR flight only
- One passenger maximum
- Light sport aircraft only (under 1,320 lbs)
- No flight in Class A, B, C, or D airspace without training
- Cannot fly for compensation
